1. We completed common core pages 91-95- the modeling/drawing of fractions problems featuring addition and subtraction.

Remember the LCD determines the units for the drawing!

2. Math test parent signature and corrections will be collected on Wednesday.

Language Arts:
1.We introduced POINT OF VIEW- Point of view addresses: 1-Who is the speaker 2-His/Her opinion

2. Common core pages 144-148 were completed.

3. Get your spellcabulary tests signed by a parent-missed words = 10xs EACH.

4. Get your grade writing assignment from Friday signed (Maniac Magee/Uncle Jed character compare and contrast writing).

History:
Presentations continue...great job, folks. Remember these are colony presentations, not STATE presentations.

We had time to work on our group presentations of our Colonial Poem, Play, or Song

Please remember, students are expected to take an AR quiz every other week on the book that is being read independently.  This grade affects both the reading effort AND  the  reading comprehension grade on the report card.

Upcoming:
This next Friday, Dec. 19, is our field trip to the Discovery Cube LA (Sylmar, CA-only 17 miles away). Students need a sack lunch!!!!

One side has word, its definition, and a sentence that proves you know what the word means.  The other side has a picture to accompany word.

2. We are working IN CLASS ONLY on common core pages 135-138.

3. Get CC book pages 128, 134, and spellcabulary tests signed by a guardian/parent.

Math: We learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers with different denominators.  Because I love ya, but I don't yet trust ya: We are not doing any independent practice on this yet.  One worksheet, page 133, rows 1-4 only.

English Language Arts:
We practiced discerning compare & contrast text structures from cause & effect text structures.
We read the passage. We read it again looking for clue words. We then decide what type of text structure was used.
Spellcabulary Test on Geo/Terra words tomorrow.

History:
Due Tuesday:
History Project: 3 people
1 Person = Name of Colony, region of Colony, map of Colony, describe founding story/ important people related to colony.

2 Person = Name of country of origin of founders, religion of founders/spiritual beliefs, name and describe Native American tribes. Relationship between colonists and Native Americans. 

3 Person = Describe climate., describe geography, describe crops/industry, tell how these are related
All: Contribute one more important fact or interesting fact about the colony.

We learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers today.
Step 1: Set up the problem vertically and change to improper fractions.
Step 2: Find the LCD and rename fractions.
Step 3: Add or subtract numerators.
Step 4: Simplify or die...

One worksheet on subtracting with unlike denominators.

Language Arts:
We compared and contrasted text structures today.  Complete through CC book 128. Follow directions and use complete sentences.

We subtracted fractions with unlike denominators.   We completed worksheet pages 125 and 127.
(Remember to slow down and look at the denominators to see if one is a multiple of the other.  If so, you don't need to do the lists in order to find the LCD.)


Language Arts:
We wrote 20 sentences using subordinating conjunctions.  Remember when the sentence starts with a subordinating conjunction, then you need a comma before the independent clause.

We finished the common core book through page 121

Science:
We took the chapter 2 science test.

MATH
We took quizzes and completed three worksheets: pages 25, 29, and 72.

LANGUAGE ARTS
We took our spellcabulary quiz and did a Making Meaning lesson on Star of Fear, Star of Hope.

Science
We read and discussed Chapter 2, Lesson 3.
Make sure you know the definition and function of : guard cells, stoma, stomata, cellular respiration, photosynthesis.

Chapter 2 Test  will be on Tuesday, December 2.  We will review Chapter 2 on Monday December 1st.  I instructed the students to study their notes for 5-10 min/day over the break and then spend longer on Sunday before we return so as to be ready for the test on Tuesday. 

Other:
Keep up your iReady, reading, and typing.  By the time we come back from Thanksgiving break, you should be ready for another AR quiz and completed at least 4 reading lessons & 4 math lessons on iReady.

Math:
We converted mixed numbers into improper fractions today.
Steps:
1.Multiply the denominator by the whole number.
2. Add the old numerator to the answer from step 1.
3. Put the answer from step 2 as the new numerator, use the old denominator.

We finished MJ 123-124, one review worksheet for reducing fractions, one worksheet for converting improper into mixed numbers.

Language Arts:
We are comparing and contrasting characters in the Common Core book. We finished through page 57. Do your best job; I'm grading these!

Science:
Plant Power!! We started chapter 2.

Other:

1. We renamed fractions today.
2. We finished the "Shelton" worksheets pages 78-79 and a project tracing the fraction shapes.  I'll be in by 7:30am tomorrow if you need further access to the shapes to finish your project.
3. Five of you still owe me the Unit 4 Math tests-Multiplying and Dividing Decimals with corrections-you need to return it with  a note that states that you didn't want to complete corrections with it, if you didn't complete corrections.

Language Arts:
1. We watched the Amelia Earhart video 10 times and took notes. We'll be writing on it tomorrow. :)
2. Get your writing for Nellie Bly signed...I still don't have some students writing turned in. See me if your not sure whether or not you turned it in.

Math: We worked on renaming fractions in the lowest terms:
1. Look at original fraction and think "What is the largest number that I can divide both the numerator and denominator by evenly?"
2. Set up the BIG 1 & divide across the numerator and the denominator.
3. Repeat, if necessary.

We completed 3 worksheets on the renaming fractions in the lowest terms.

We completed the first two paragraphs of our essays to answer the following question: Why did Nellie Bly become a stunt reporter?

Paragraph 1 = introduction
Paragraph 2 = body paragraph with one idea about why Bly became a stunt reporter

Tomorrow will be the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs about why she became a stunt reporter.

We covered Chapter 5, Lesson 2-The French Colonies!  Oui oui, mon cherie!

Other-
Wreath sales were extended until next Monday-you can turn them into the office next Monday even Read as if your life depended upon it-it does!
Type for 20 minutes. Remember, you are expected to be able to type two pages in one sitting by April so that you can complete an online essay for the yearly exams.

We finished reading through page 60 in the Making Meaning book- just the 6 pages of the "Survival and Loss" section.
Remember to study your vocab. and spelling words.

Science test postponed until tomorrow afternoon due to extended rehearsal today.

Math: We completed the quiz from our common core book.
We completed EASY division work packets (3 pages, the 4th page is a work space only ;) )

Language Arts:  We had our Red Ribbon Week assembly.  We brain stormed ideas to do when we are feeling sad, angry, or scared that HEALTHY ideas.  Bring in five strategies that you can do when you are having those feelings. Get it signed by a parent.

Science:
Explain the six basic processes of life.  Write a note telling me that you explained what those processes are and to whom did you explain them. Get it signed by a parent.

Other:
Wreath, the weather outside is delightful-but our fifth grade coffers are frightful (ly low) Please buy a wreath, buy a wreath, buy a wreath.

Red Ribbon Week: Have you discussed your strategies to stay drug free?

A. We worked on division with decimals.  We learned the steps:
1. Set up problem-remember the dividend goes inside the division "house."
2. Move the decimal over in the divisor. (Move it to the right of the ones place.)
3. Move the decimal over in the dividend the SAME number of places as you did in the divisor.
4. Move decimal up in new spot into quotient.
5. DMSCB
6. Check answer by using inverse operation (multiply quotient by the divisor)

B. two worksheets: complete all of p. 46, 51, & 53

C. Get parent signature on all 3 quizzes

LA:
A. Complete 10 cause and effect sentences: use the words "because", "so", or "as a result."
B. Get spelling test signed by a parent and write misspelled words 10 times each.

Read for 40 minutes, type for 20 minutes, complete iReady lessons.

Math:
We reviewed the basics for division. Review your notes on dividend, divisor, quotient and all the LOVELY varieties for division: slants, division symbol, "the house", fraction bar.  Ask yourself what goes in "the house"?   Make sure that you understand equivalent fractions.  We will use all of these for divison with decimals tomorrow.

Language Arts:
Common core book: pages 43-49. Attack the questions and read the three articles on Leonardo daVinci and Gutenberg.  DO NOT ANSWER THE QUESTIONS, WE'LL DO THEM TOGETHER! :)

SCIENCE:
Finish your ABC science vocabulary list and definitions.  We'll be using these tomorrow. :)

Other:
Wreath Sales:  Mrs. Bodden will be by tomorrow to check your lists of 10 names that you want to sell to: be prepared.

iReady- Many of you are completing the 2 lessons in math and 2 in reading each week-good for you! You are making fine progress and ripping through those lessons.  For those of you who have fallen behind, expect your report cards to reflect your effort.  Remember you are welcome to come into the classroom before school or after-school to complete lessons.
*Make sure that you you complete the EXTRA lesson first each week.  These are the lessons that I have assigned individually to augment instruction. Some of these lessons will be really easy; enjoy those!  Some of the lessons are harder; persevere-you can do it!
Read, type, and say something nice to your parents!  That's an imperative sentence!  (mandatory)

We completed two worksheets...Math boxes 8-1 and 8-9.

Language Arts:
We took our spelling test and completed common core pages 37-42 (which were collected as a quiz.)
Some of you have until Monday to redo your cause and effect sentences. You need to connect the cause and the effect in ONE sentence using a conjunction like "because" or "so" or "as a result."

Science:
Review your notes on cell organelles-make sure you know the job/function of each organelle.

1. MJ 102, 108.
2. We covered partial products division.
3. Math tests and math corrections are due on Monday, October 20th with parent signature.  All students who choose NOT to do corrections must get a note signed by a parent

Language Arts:
1. Spelling test tomorrow on mono/uni words and bi/duo words-see spelling city
2. We completed at least two sentences using the cause and effect key words to describe students' experiences yesterday with either being helpful or self-serving.
3. Get Princess/Cinderella writing project (final draft, rough draft, and all graphic organizers) signed by a parent.

Science:
We played a theater game where students acted out the "cell organelle" and other students guessed which organelle was being acted out.

Finish your double bubble map for comparing and contrasting animal cell and plant cell organelles.

Other:
Read, type, iReady.  By the way, good job to those of you who recognized the Greek/Latin root "tele" today during the science lesson. Way to study your vocabulary lesson on iReady! :)

Extended Assignment: We are studying cause and effect. We studied clue words for cause and effect. 
We have a cause and effect experiment:

1. 1/2 the class (closest to Pimenta's room) has the assignment of having as much fun as your parents ALLOW today and noticing your energy level tonight.  You must follow your parents' rules for safety and behavior.

2. 1/2 the class (closest to Faieta's room) has the assignment of being as helpful as they possibly can-again, following all parents' rules for safety and behavior.

All students need to mentally reflect on how their assignment made them feel. Rate your energy level 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Rate your emotions.  Satisfied 1-10, Happy 1-10, Sad 1-10, Proud 1-10.

We are doing a social experiment to see the "effects" (how we feel) after these "causes."
We will be writing about these tomorrow.

Science:
We finished chapter 1, lesson 1 on cells! :)  Review your notes.

LA:
We finished CC book 31-34 today in class.

Math test tomorrow on unit 2!  Use your math journals and notes to study. We completed MJ p. 45 for more practice.

Language Arts:
Study your spelling lists: Mono/Uni, Bi/Duo

Science:
We had a big discussion about cells and living things.  We discussed how cells are made of atoms. We discussed how our bodies are made of cells and that each cell in our body has a job/function. We need to give energy to every cell in our body for it to stay alive!

Other:
We learned about the 5th grade wreath sales coming up...write your list of 10 people you want to sell to..Mrs. Bodden will be checking in on those lists.

iReady 2 lessons in math and 2 in reading are due this Sunday, read for 40 minutes each night, type for 20 minutes each night.

Study for your test on Tuesday: concentrate on decimal addition, subtraction, and multiplication.  The test is on Unit 2 from your math journals.  Study your notes and use learnzillion.com for support/reteaching.

Language Arts:
What an amazing day of writing about science experiments and doing some!  Wow, good job following directions fifth graders.

History:
We completed Chapter 4, lesson 4-We'll finish chapter 4 next Monday.

Other:
iReady lessons-due by Sunday- two in math and two in reading. (Most students finished those today during class-yay!)

Read for 40 minutes daily, type for twenty minutes (iREady does not count as typing time-that's mostly clicking time)

Math:
Test Tuesday on Unit 2 in your Math journals, study your notes and your math journals.
We completed MJ pg. 50-51- I CHANGED THE DIRECTIONS ON THESE PAGES- DO AN ESTIMATE AND DO THE MULTIPLICATION FOR ALL PROBLEMS.  I did this because the test requires the estimate and the problem to be solved.

Look at page 64 in your CC book.  It uses the area model that we saw in the learnzillion.com lesson today.

Language Arts:
I was so proud of you awesome spellers today. Great job on the language arts tests, too.

Math:
We learned how to multiply with decimals today.  Make sure that you complete the two problems on the bottom of page 63 by tomorrow-remember the steps for word problems and all answers must include units! :)

Math test = next Tuesday, Review Unit two in your math journals: decimal addition and subtraction, lattice multiplication, landmarks (maximum, minimum, range, mode, median), expanded notation, NOT decimal division,  and word problems (think steps).

Language Arts:
1. The Line Drive test got moved up to tomorrow due to CELDT testing on Friday.  Please reread "Line Drive" and be ready to explain why that is a good title with support/reasons from the text. This will be an open book test.

2. Spelling and Vocabulary test = tomorrow due to CELDT testing. Remember the spelling words are in your practice book, p. 10 and on spellingcity.com

3.  We covered types of sentences: declarative, interrogatory, imperative, and exclamatory.  Oh my, we also covered interjections.
Oops, I forgot my keys at home.  Goodness, it is important to remember that interjections are separated from the sentence by a COMMA!

3. Cinderella stories final copy = due on Friday. Here's an imperative sentence, "Attach all tree map, double bubble, and rough drafts behind your beautiful final copy."  You may type the final copy, if you like-typing is optional.

History:
We finished Chapter 4 Lesson 3 today.  No homework required.

Other:

We learned how to do lattice multiplication!!! Wahoo, we loved it!
We completed MJ 54-56.
If you want extra practice complete SL Unit 2, lesson 9 (2-9)
This is on the next math test.  The next math test will be week after next, be sure you know how to multiply and divide  3 digit by 2 digit numbers both with and without decimals.

Language Arts:
We wrote our introductory and conclusion paragraphs. for our contrast and comparison paragraphs.
Introduction should have  a hook (funny, question, quote, interesting fact) and a brief overview of what your body paragraphs are about.
Conclusion gives a brief review of your body paragraphs and YOUR opinion about the information in the body paragraphs-not about the stories.

History:
We almost finished the history presentations.
Other:
5th grade committee welcomes your submissions for the 5th Grade Class of 2015 t-shirt designs-make sure it's on regular sized paper, fill the paper, & no more than 3 colors total! Good luck!

1. We finished two paragraphs on the Cinderella suite of stories.  One of them is a contrast type paragraph, while the other is a compare type paragraph.

We completed out Common Core book pages through p. 41, on multiplication. Make sure you know how to do the standard algorithm.

We completed all pages on rounding and estimating. Common Core 30-33; MJ 32,33,35,36, 39 & two math worksheets
When rounding:
1. Count by the place value that they tell you to round to.  
2. Draw a number line and write your two choices on each end.
3. Place the value that you must round to on your number line.
4. Decide which side is that number closest to & use that number for your answer.

Example: Round 4.569 to the nearest tenth.

1.  Counting by tenths... 4.5, 4.6

Your child should be able to explain how to round decimals using a number line. We completed through common core book p. 29

Language Arts:
We made a six part story diagram. Your child should be able to find a direct quote from the story to prove that they know what the characters, setting, conflict, 2 plot events, and resolution. Make sure you include the page number for each quotation.

History:
Remember that next week, Tuesday your History projects are due.

Science:
We finished Chapter 8, Lesson 1. Have your child explain what reactivity and  precipitate means. Also, how are photosynthesis and cellular respiration are related?

Other:
Type for 20 minutes; read for 40 minutes;  4 more iReady lessons due by this next Sunday, September 28 at 9pm.

1. Get multiplication quiz signed by a parent/grandparent. (Remember bring them the pen and the quiz, this increases the likelihood of success!)
  2. We reviewed rules of divisibility by completing MJ p. 19
  3.  We worked on common core pages 12-13-whew, we got deep into powers of 10!  Make sure your child understands how powers of ten are related to multiplication and division.

LA:
  We listened to the tear-jerker story Something to Remember Me By.   We are combining our knowledge of inference with the good writing practice of including many details by completing a paragraph that describes, without stating, an object/animal/band/food that either disgusts or scares us.  I will grade these on how well, I can infer based on students' details.

History:
   Finish reading Chapter 3, Lesson 1.  Read with a purpose!   Look for ideas that you can use for your upcoming barter project.  Who? What? Where? Why? How? When???????  More details to follow.

Other:
Read for 40 minutes. Type for 20 minutes

 We are working on place value! Remember each place is a power of ten higher or lower than its neighbor.   For example, the tens place is 1/10 the value of the hundreds place.  Conversely, the hundreds place is 10 times the value of the tens place.

  We completed the common core green book through page 3.

English Language Arts:

We are working on inferring from text. We find text clues & pair that information that we already know to make an inference.

We completed through page 20 in the common core book.


Science:

Chapter 7 test tomorrow! STUDY!!!!! Remember your atom presentations, your notes, and your book.

Other:

Math:
We worked on prime factorization.  Make sure you know how to do this!!!  The Unit One test this Wednesday covers this concept. We completed math journal pages on prime factorization Lesson 1-8. More practice is available in the the Study Link 1-8.

Wednesday's test = arrays, prime/composite numbers, prime factorization, exponents.

Language Arts:
We're working on Main Idea and Details in the Green Common Core books. We completed pages 2-10 in class.

Great job on the 2 paragraphs on Benjamin Franklin, everyone!


Science:
 The Chapter 7 test has been moved to Friday due to the rules assembly which conflicts with our test-the nerve of some people.  Y'all are doing a great job studying and I'm sure you'll do a great job on the test.  Review your notes, your atom projects, and the review we completed in class.

Other:
Make sure you're reading 40 minutes each night  and taking an AR quiz AT LEAST every other week.

Typing is mandatory each night for 20 minutes, as usual.

We learned the  rules of divisibility. This concept is on the test next Wednesday.  There's extra practice in the study link book, lesson 1-5.

We revised our Benjamin Franklin paragraphs.   Keep all old copies/rough drafts/graphic organizers.

Science:
We had a fabulous introduction to compounds and chemical changes.
Science test next Wednesday on ALL of chapter 7.

Other:

We worked on the steps for attacking word problems today.  This is day three of this process. Your child should share the steps for attacking word problems:
1. Read problem twice
2. Underline/highlight key numbers/units

5. Think: Determine operation (add/subtact/multiply/divide) by looking at key words in boxed ques.
6. Fill in numbers, units, & operation

Performance begins at 7:00pm & should end by 8:45pm for parents who are picking up without attending the show tonight.
