Language Arts:
We reviewed the reasons for punctuation, capitalization, and format (paragraphs) today.
 We also practiced turning our main ideas and details into paragraphs.
Tomorrow will be a test on these skills and on inferencing.

Math:
We reviewed the expanded forms and place value.
Study for quiz tomorrow.

Science:
We reviewed the Lesson 3 answers for the worksheet. Quiz tomorrow.

History:
We began thinking about European explorers and their treasures and symbols.

Other:
Make sure you have 1 math iREady lesson done and 1 Reading iReady lesson completed by this Sunday at 8 pm.
Students should be practicing typing for 10-15 minutes each night to build their skills. Check out the free typing programs at "Road to 900 Keppel Elementary"

Language Arts:
We studied the steps for answering questions explicitly and inferentially? Do you remember???

1. Reading the text and the question.
2. Ask myself: Is the exact answer in the text (explicit) or do I need to infer?
3. Circle clue words, phrases, or sentences that answer the question.
4.  Decide what portion of the information I want to quote.
5. Turn the question into a statement and add my quote.

READ!

Math:
We studied how multiplying by a power of ten affected the product. No new assignments.
Study!

Science:
Finish your Ch. 7, L. 3 definitions and worksheet by tomorrow.

Other:
Start doing your iREADY lessons. One math and one reading is due by Sunday.

Language Arts:
We began advanced discussion techniques...how to respectfully disagree.  For example, a student could say, "I hear that you think the main idea of the article is ........., but in my opinion it is ........... because insert proof from the text here."

Please get a parent signature on the graded graphic organizers from the sports helping to heal injuries article.

Math:
We began to talk about bases and exponents. Study your notes

Please get a parent signature on the quiz from Friday

Students who earned a grade of a "1"or a "2" spent 30 minutes reviewing the relationship between moving decimals and multiplying or dividing by a power of ten.

Science:
We began Chapter 7, Lesson 3. Get definitions done by Wednesday. Quiz on Thursday.

Other:
Student council applications are due on Tuesday.

Language Arts:
 We worked collaboratively to create graphic organizers which outlined 2 main ideas and details in an article about supernovae.


Math:
We took a quiz on multiplying and dividing by a power of 10. Many students realized that they need to be studying their notes nightly.

Science:
We took a quiz on chapter 7, lesson 2.

History:
We read about the eastern Native American tribes today

PE:
Many students still need to turn in their forms to the PE teachers.

Other:
Have a safe and restful weekend.

2. Finish GEMS book pages 9-13.

Science:
1. Complete worksheet for Chapter 7, Lesson 2- just do the best that you can.  We'll go over answers tomorrow. :)

Other:
1. PE is tomorrow, you may bring a water bottle, a towel or yoga mat, and a hat. These items are optional and for your comfort.

2. Remember the Fifth Grade movie night is coming up-this is an event that PARENTS attend with their children. Yay...the movie is The Sandlot.

We had a fun lesson learning about each other by speaking and listening: presenting Me-Bag items, posing questions and making connections with one another. Great job, class!

Make sure your Reading Book is covered by Monday. If you can't cover it at home, please come to my room on Monday during recess-we'll have a book covering PARTY!  (If possible, bring a brown paper bag to our paper bag book covering party. Thanks)

Math:
Make sure the "Write the Number for the Decimal Names" worksheet is completed by Monday. NO parent signatures required-but, parents are invited to look at any and all work/note books. :)

Science:
We took our chapter 7, lesson 1 quiz today.

Other:
These numbers please return your parent compact with the appropriate signatures by Monday: 17, 24, 35, and 11

Students interested in working on the Keppel Newspaper, please see Mrs. Pimenta for an application.

Students interested in being on the Student Council,  your attendance is required at a meeting in Mr. Hewitt's room next Thursday at 2:30pm.

Language Arts:
We learned how to Draw Conclusions from Group Discussion by stating the topic and restating the GROUP'S main connection with the topic.

MATH:
We did 2 lessons today:
1. Learning how to quickly identify decimal place values.
2. Learning how to read and write numbers with decimals values.

For tonight:
Write what these terms mean in relation to reading decimals "first name"  and "last name" -
NO PARENT SIGNATURE REQUIRED FOR THIS....I just want to see what you understand. We'll write notes and practice some more tomorrow.

Science:
I handed out a worksheet for practice/study for Friday's quiz. This is optional, I'll be going over all answers tomorow.
Other:
TONIGHT IS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT-SEE YOU AT 5:30PM IN THE CAFETERIA FOR THE FIFTH GRADE COMMITTEE MEETING. :)

Congratulations to Matthew for being closest with the estimation jar. I wonder what he'll bring in for us to estimate????

Chapter 7, Lesson 1 Quiz on Friday.  (Study the definitions for matter and mass...these are confusing and are on the quiz. ;)

Other:
Tomorrow is a minimum day and Back to School night -Parent's Meet in the Cafeteria at 5:30pm. Students are NOT invited to this event.

Wednesday is Back to School Night- Parent Meeting for Fifth Grade @ 5:30pm in the Cafeteria
Wednesday is a minimum day.  Dismissal is 12:05pm!
Many students had their blue cards returned for missing signatures or need of an out of state contact. YOU May put an out of country contact-Egypt, Phillipines, Armenia, Germany, whereever! :)

Mrs. Cannon's Language Arts:
Be sure to bring a silent reading book and water. This week we are trying to complete the baseline iREADY testing.

Mrs. Cannon's Math:
1. Get the Parent Letter signed in the GEMS book (page 1).

2. We're trying to get the baseline iReady testing done. We still have 55 students that have not completed both tests.

Cannon Homeroom:
Other: Please join the PTA and sign & return the Thrusday Folders and Behavior Cards. If your child has all E's, that's amazing; if mostly E's-that's expected; if few E's, then please discuss better behavior choices with your child.
