Math:
We played a math game with decimals today and reviewed powers of 10.
Be sure pages 14-15 are finished in your GEMS book and complete the two (insultingly easy) worksheets.

ELA:
We reviewed the point of view lesson and completed the figurative language pages 266-269 in RCC

Science:

We began lesson one, from "Chapter 6: The Solar System"

History:
We learned why the colonists were in Quite a SNIT....and about propaganda (Boston Massacre).
Read the three articles in the READY COMMON CORE Reading book pages 250-25

Other:
Make sure you're doing independent reading and getting those IREADY lessons done. The trimester ends this week.

Fire Safety Test has been moved to this Thursday, March 3, 2016.  Remember, the top winners get to go to the Firefighter's Picnic! :)

History:

We began and ended the day with history...ask your kids what the colonists were in "quite a snit" about...


Hoover Day:
We were given an extensive tour of the Hoover classrooms and arts programs. Our Hoover Buddies really showed off their campus. A great time was had by all.

Other:
We ended the Apex Fun Run at $46 dollars per lap!! Way to go, "Boom Goes the Cannon."

Have a lovely weekend and make sure you stay caught up on those iREADY lessons.

Remember the Fire Safety Test and Essays are due next week. The essay is optional.

  Students played Power of 10 Yahtzee to get quick at computing Powers of 10.
 Please get Quiz 13 and 18 signed by a parent.

ELA:
We completed the RCC pages 302-307.
Prefix worksheet packets are due on MONDAY

History:
 We finished reading and discussing chapter 9.

Other:
Today was the APEX fun run! You should congratulate your children they were super positive!  They had sooooooooo much fun chanting "Boom Goes the Cannon".

Bring a lunch tomorrow-we have our Hoover field trip.

The students took quizzes on RCC lessons 13 and 18 today. Three worksheets were assigned. Bring all worksheets from yesterday and today to correct for smarties tomorrow. :)

ELA:
Students continued to work on point of view in the RCC book.

Students took the Chapter 5 test today.

PE:
Students continue to do their physical fitness testing.

Math:
We completed Unit 4, page 1 (a, b, and c-with explanation) and page 3, only numbers 1-2.
Also, I assigned worksheet p. 7 which compares place value.

Language Arts:
We began the unit of point of view lesson in RCC. Remember point of view is the narrator's or speaker's opinion or motivation.
Independent reading is your only assignment.

Science:
Chapter 5 test tomorrow!! Be ready!

Improvisation with Mrs. Gilbert:
Students continued to work on developing scenes based on prompts from their partners.

Other:
Tomorrow is library day. Bring your books to return.

APEX fun run is this Thursday, we are neck and neck with Pimenta's class in pledge totals. Please remember that every little bit helps. Feel free to contribute a flat donation, if you are not comfortable with a per lap donation. Our class voted that our team name shall be "Boom Goes the Cannon"- I find this mortifying and funny!

All parents are cordially invited to help count laps at this amazingly positive and energetic event. Team "Boom Goes the Cannon" needs your support. Please join us in the classroom at 12:50 to walk down to the lower playground with us.

Students need to BRING LUNCH on FRIDAY because we will be returning from HOOVER after the cafeteria is closed for the day. Students may use their lunch boxes or containers.

Reminder: All student cell phones are to be OFF ( not simply muted, but actually OFF) on school premises. There shall be no texting, recording, photographing, or calling on school grounds.

We took quizzes on lessons 14 and 17.
Be sure 3 worksheets are complete for grading for smarties tomorrow. :)

ELA:
We worked on finding answers explicitly and inferencing to find answers in literature.
Be sure both worksheets are complete.

History:
We finished the chapter on Slavery and began the chapter on Colonial Williamsburg.

Science:
Chapter 5 test is on this Wednesday, February 24.

PE:
Students are running the mile tomorrow-please send them with water and appropriate clothing. 

Other:
We worked on our classroom books.

Many students have progress reports coming home due to falling behind on iREADY lessons.

Be sure to enter your APEX fun run pledges. Remember, any donation, whether per lap or flat donation is crucial towards funding our arts educators.

Tonight's competition for APEX is the out of state pledges. The class with the most out of state or out of country pledges gets a special dance party tomorrow.

Math:
We reviewed the quizzes taken yesterday. Study lessons 14, 17, and 18 in READY COMMON CORE BOOK and your accompanying notes to be ready for quizzes on Monday.

Language Arts:
We continued to work on Fluency while reading aloud. We studied flowers for detail and drew them, following Georgia O'Keefe's lead and eye for detail.

Science:
We did the chapter review for Chapter 5. Test is next Wednesday.

Other:
We continue to take donations for the Apex Fun Run!

Many students will have progress reports sent home on Monday for failing to get caught up on iREADY assignments.

I stil need field trip forms for Friday's excursion to Hoover from # 20 and #21.

ELA:
We finished out vocab skits and worked on fluency with "Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street."

Science:
We finished chapter 5; test = next Wednesday---STUDY!
Complete the chapter review by tomorrow.

History:
We began discussing the horrific slave trade practices in Colonial America.  This was very heavy topic.  The students had a hard time believing the treatment of West Africans and transport practices of slave traders.

Other:
Fire Safety Test and Essay due March 1st.

5TH GRADE COMMITTEE MEETING IS THIS FRIDAY AT 8:15AM IN OUR CAFETERIA, be sure to sign in at the front office.

No students may be in the classroom before school without signing in at the front office first.

There are many students who have not caught up on their iREADY lessons. Students were reminded today that their iREADY completion is reflected in their effort grades on the upcoming report card.  Students who receive N's are not eligible for the GOLD award at the end of the year. I did not require any additional lessons over  the Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks. Students should have finished 22 lessons in reading and 22 lessons in math since November 1st. The total online reflects the lessons completed since the beginning of the year. Please email me if you are curious about how many lessons your child has completed. I am happy to keep you updated. 2. STUDY for at least 20 minutes RCC pages 194-197.  We will answer questions and take comments on these pages. Come to class with a question or comment describing what you understand about these pages.

Language Arts:

1. Finish making any last minute changes to your essay. REad it aloud to someone at home.

2. Print essay and bring it in tomorrow.

3. Get parent signature on vocab/spelling test-make corrections 10 times each for mistakes.

Science:
Be ready for a quiz on Lesson 4, Chapter 5 tomorrow. Study your worksheet.

Math:
The entire class period was dedicated to working on the worksheet packet for review.
Be ready to grade worksheets for puppy rewards tomorrow.

Hey, math students don't forget that you need to do one of the lessons on tenmarks.com by FRIDAY.  They are called NUMERICAL EXPRESSIONS (one lesson is on writing them and the other is on evaluating them)

Lastly,  tests are due on Friday with a parent signatures-optional corrections are also due on Friday.

ELA:
Be sure that 3 paragraphs and conclusion are written by tomorrow. Remember "School Story", spelling, and vocabulary test are Friday.

History: We spend a looooooong time reviewing great presentation skills (projecting, facing an audience, not distracting audience while your group member is presenting, and not simply reading from the slide)  Also, we learned Southern Colonies: AGRICULTURE, Northern Colonies: FOUNDED FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM.

OTHER:
Tomorrow is panoramic picture day. Students need to wear their FIFTH GRADE T-SHIRT. They may wear it over their clothes, if they have a special outfit for their pictures.

All students will be photographed but only students who pay for a panoramic photo will receive one. The order envelope was in last week's Thursday folder.  There are more order forms in the front office. :)

ELA:
1. Get one source to proove your paragraph's main point for each of your three paragraphs. Make sure you share your document with me.
2. Finish the suffix packet by Friday-FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS.

Spelling test this Friday on Practice book p. 96 words.
Story test this Friday on "School Story". You should read this story three more times at home to be ready.
Vocabulary test this Friday on Practice Book p. 92 words.
The spelling and vocabulary words are from "School Story".


History:
Be ready to present if you have not already done so. Remember that I'm grading your notes, too!

Other:
1. The blue forms from Toll are due tomorrow.
2.  Please indicate your first preference and second preference for electives. If you only want "Wheel", then you may mark only "Wheel"-with no second preference indicated.
3. If your child is NOT attending Toll next year, please write that on top the blue form.

Math: Get two multi-review worksheets signed by a parent by Tuesday. Quiz and Math test with parent signatures are due NEXT FRIDAY. Optional: corrections are due next Friday.

ELA: We worked on spelling rules p/m/b words get "IM" prefix, r/l words get the first letter doubled. (regular-irregular) (legible-illegible).  All other words use the "in" prefix.

We had an introduction to Toll this afternoon. The elective choice forms will be sent home on Tuesday.

Other:

A flyer was sent home about our fifth-grade art installation on February 20th at GCC. So exciting!  Hope you can make it.

We reviewed the major performance task from yesterday's test and reviewed helpful hints for organizing large amounts of information.

We are working on worksheets pages 71/71 and 63/64. These are excellent reviews of MANY concepts taught this year.

Language Arts:
Make sure you complete RCC pages 215-216. Great job today identifying text structures.

History:  Projects are due today! Make sure you shared with me so that I can grade them.

Other:
Remember to do independent reading, typing, and iREADY practice each school day.

We took a comprehensive test on fractions today.
Finish worksheet page 46/51.

Language Arts:
We worked on contrasting text structures. Finish ONE sentence on p. 210. No evidence necessary.

IMPROV. & PE were this afternoon.

History:
Projects are due tomorrow.

Other:
Fire Safety test = March 1. Booklets were distributed today. Be sure to study, the top two students get to attend the picnic from each class. Additionally, a top essay from each class will be selected to attend the Fire Safety Picnic in May. :)

Fifth Grade t-shirts were distributed. Make sure that they are worn on THURSDAY, FEB. 11TH for panoramic picture.

We began studying problem-solution and chronological text structures. Get RCC pages 208, 209, and the top chart of 211 completed by tomorrow.

Science:
We took a quiz on Chapter 5, lesson 2 today.

Other:
Fire Safety assembly was today.  Fire Safety Test will be on March 1st.
Our very own spelling bee winner will be on Charter cable, channel 15 at 7pm. Wahoo!  Go #17!
