Math: We continued with our additon and subtraction word problems. Complete pages 108-111 in the Ready Common Core book. Remember to model the problems using a fraction bar or a number line.

Get parent signatures on three quizzes.


Language Arts:
Write definitions and vocabulary sentences. Use the contrast word clues for each sentence.
Vocabulary and spelling test on "Sailing Home" words, p. 61 and p. 65 in the Practice Book. Story test = Friday for Sailing Home.

Get a parent signature on the spelling test, Reading test ("Leonardo's Horse"), and questions 2 & 4 for "Leonardo's Horse".

Science:
Finish the table from science book page 112 adding key words to help you remember organs/examples from each system.

Other:
The fifth grade skate party is coming...are you going???

Math:

We took math quizzes today. All worksheets and common core lesson 10 (pages 102-103) are due after the Thanksgiving Break.

ELA:

We took a vocabulary, a story, and a spelling test today.

Get the Comma Quiz and the Questions 1 & 5 from Reading Book p. 244 signed by an adult.

Science:
We took a pop quiz today on vocabulary.  Study for the Chapter Two test tomorrow.

History:
We are plotting a malevolent take-over of Mr. Shelton's class. Design a flag and we'll stake our claim....extra credit for history:  Design a Room 1107 flag and explain the significance of the designs on your flag.

Other:
Get your behavior card and Thursday Folder signed by an adult.
Be thankful for the people who love you.

English Language Arts:
We worked on punctuating with commas and continued with story questions. Yesterday we did questions 1 and 5 on p. 244 of Adventures Reading book.

Today: We completed questions 2 and 4.


Science:
We continued to review chapter 2.

ELA: 

We read Leonardo's Horse. Story test = Thursday

Spelling words from Practice Book  p. 46 (They are the "When Washington Crossed" words on spellingcity.com) Spelling test = Thursday

vocab = Practice Book p. 42, (persuading, crucial, maneuvered, encountered, crisis, appealed, perserverance, destiny)  vocab test = Thursday


Science:

We finished chapter 2, lesson 3
Students need to be able to recognize the chemical reactions for cellular respiration and photosynthesis.

Test =Friday.


History: I issued History Alive books to most students today. I'm making copies for those who don't have it. :)

Other:

Math:
  We began adding and subtracting fractions with UNLIKE denominators. Do you remember the last step? SIMPLIFY OR DIE!

Complete two worksheets by Monday.

Also, be sure to ask me about the fate of our friend "Spidey."

ELA:
We spent time working on punctuating with commas today.  If you begin a sentence with "if", then you're going to need a comma in it.  When you read the blog, think about where the comma goes in each sentence. This weekend be sure to read a book, play outside, and spend time with your family.
Wow, there's a lot ways to use a comma. Mrs. Cannon says, "Study your uses of a comma!"

Science:
We reviewed study skills for science success:
1. Study with a buddy.
2. Reread the chapter
3. Recopy your notes
4. Make flashcards-create sentences that talk about the relationship between the flashcards.
5. Have someone quiz you at home, or face time a friend to quiz each other.
6. Look up concepts online using "elementary" in the search terms to keep the explanations accessible.


Other:
Tonight is Keppel Rocks, are you coming?????? This is a major fifth grade FUNdraiser!  Rock on, people!
Next week is a regular school week!!! Phew, there's been many crazy schedule days.

Math:
  We worked on estimating fractions to have  sense of the approximate answer.
   Get multiplication worksheet signed by a parent and finish EASY addition worksheets-we'll check for CHO tomorrow.
There are 23 NEW assignments on tenmarks.com about fractions-they're due by 12/28....have at it. By the way, there is a strong correlation between math grades and students who do the tenmarks.com assignments....I'm just saying....

ELA:
   Students composed narratives as the second part of the district benchmark.  MANY students still owe me their final drafts with revisions and a parent signature on the graded final drafts.

Science:
Chapter 2 test = Next Thursday

We studied xylem and phloem, and types of roots. STUDY

Other:
We completed the student council elections today...best of luck to our classroom candidates (fingers crossed for you.)

Please come to Keppel Rocks tomorrow night-this is an important fundraiser for fifth grade!

Report card envelopes, Thursday folders, History test, and behavior cards all need to be signed and returned by tomorrow.

We had a fabulous field trip today to Glendale City College Planetarium and Science Workshop.  Ask your kiddos what they learned today. They are all happy that we are going back this spring. :)


Other:
We have no school tomorrow in honor of Veteran's Day.

Regular schedule on Thurday, with report cards coming home. The envelope will need to be signed and returned, parents keep the report card.

Friday is a minimum day.

Math:

  We converted back and forth between mixed numbers and improper fractions. Complete three worksheets-due Thursday!
Get three equivalent fraction worksheets signed by a responsible adult.
Get math test signed.


Language Arts:

We completed the district benchmark test.
Get writing signed by an adult, make corrections and reprint story.

History:

We took chapter 5 test today.

Science:

We reviewed electrical circuits for field trip tomorrow and the function of stems, roots, and leaves.

Other:
The fifth grade committee reports that our wreath sales are way down from last year's numbers. If the fifth grade student fund does not make enough money with Keppel Rocks, there will have to be cuts to play day.  Please help at Keppel Rocks. You can send me an email and I'll forward your information to Virginia Porter, the head of the fifth grade committee.

FIELD TRIP TOMORROW-EAT A LARGE BREAKFAST AND PACK A LUNCH. We'll eat at school when we return from the field trip.

  We continued working on fractions: three worksheets are due Monday...yes, they must write in the BIG ONE-ask your child what this means...

ELA:
We completed RCC 140-146...due Monday.
I collected reading logs. Many students did not turn in complete reading logs. This will be reflected in their report cards as "N" for Language Arts effort.

Science:
Students began reading about plant classification

History:
Chapter Five review was completed today, test = MONDAY

Other:
No school for students tomorrow!

Math: 
We studied fractions as a math concept today. STUDY your notes and complete the two ridiculously easy worksheets on fractions.

Language Arts:
 We studied metaphors and similes. We began work on finding themes in poetry.  Complete page 137 in RCC book. Pages 140-147 will be assigned tomorrow, if you want to get a jump start on them.

History:
 We read about the English Colony at Jamestown. We're getting really good at taking notes in a table. :)

History test = Monday, 11-9-15

PE-
The students are playing tennis-such fun!

Other: 
Remember, wreath orders are due tomorrow. :)
Dine out night at ISLANDS-wahooooooo!
Rockin' for the Arts is a fifth grade fundraiser-all profits  go towards Colonial Day and Play Day.

We worked on editing our narratives.
Final copy due tomorrow.

History: 

We reviewed Chapter 5, lesson 2 and read chapter 5, lesson 3, page 199. Finish notes on P. 199 by tomorrow

Test on Chapter 5 = next Monday

PE today.

Other:

Wreath sales end this Thursday.

NO School on Friday for students.

Dine out night at Islands....yummy fun and no dishes.....!

Math:
  We did a project in which we calculated the cost of each sculpture created in our classes with Mrs. Zierhut. We used rounding, multiplying, adding, and dividing with decimals to get the job done.

-Make a final presentation copy with all values neatly organized and all calculations shown. I'm turning these into Mrs. Zierhut and Ms. Siegal tomorrow.

-Study test tomorrow on all things decimal.


Language Arts:

We worked on revising.

Sign into your google docs and MAKE all revisions.

Science:
We spent quality time with microscopes and student presentations today.

History: 
  Finish taking notes on Chapter 5, Lesson 2.

Make sure you know who these men are & their significance to French colonization of North America: Cartier, Champlain, Jolliet, Nicollet, Brule, and Marquettte.

Other: Some students still need to turn in their field trip forms!

The fifth grade committee is in need of serious help organizing, volunteering, and procuring supplies for Keppel Rocks. Fifth graders keep all the profits from this event.
