Math:  

Today we learned the procedure and a few models for adding and subtracting decimals...ask your students to show you the hand motions for =/- with decimals:
1. When I  + or - decimals,
2. I line up the decimals,
3. And, add any insignificant 0s that I need.
4. Finally, I add using the standard procedure.

By tomorrow, complete RCC 56-57

ELA:

A summary of today's lesson would be...that we learned about SUMMARIZING!

RCC p.28-29, ONLY complete numbers 1-3 on page 29 because we are doing page 30-31 IN CLASS tomorrow.

Read, Cannon victims may read their science to fulfill their nightly reading. :)
Reading logs are due on Friday.

Science:

We reviewed the amazing interdependence of cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
Read Chapter 8, Lesson 2 at home tonight. Be ready to discuss and take notes at school.

Chapter 8 test = next Wednesday!

History:

  History projects are due on Thursday, October 8.

Other:
 We love the PTA, thanks for supporting them by ordering through the catalog.

Math: We continued our quest to master and model the main multiplication procedure, it was magnificent.

ELA: The main idea continued with exploding stars today...complete RCC pages 18-23.

Art: The bodies are growing day by day...we have almost complete limbs!  It's getting creepy in Mrs. Zierhut's room.

PE: Please remember to send water with your children, as it is hot outside at the end of our day.

Other:
Thanks to the families who have donated to the PTA fundraiser.  Yay!

Math: 
Due to Cougar Pride Assembly, we had a short math class today. We took a powers of ten quiz.  We'll correct the Delicious Decimals paper and GEMS pages 36-39  for smarties on Monday.

ELA: 
We took a vocabulary quiz and did our two main ideas writing.  New reading logs were given and are due by next Friday.

History:
History Project guidelines were reviewed. I really emphasized that NO materials must be purchased to complete this project.  I am happy to give out paper for students to complete all parts of this project.  Here's a link to the project guidelines. 

Kumbaya:
Various teachers discussed internet safety or did art projects.

Other:
Please check that your child is in the appropriate uniform each day-school colors, and all shorts or skirts/dresses must be longer than their hands hanging down or worn with leggings.

 Remember that, by Sunday, each student should have completed 10 math and 10 reading iREADY lessons.  Have a great weekend.

We continued our foray into estimating and rounding with decimals.
Complete GEMS pages 36-39

ELA:

We practiced finding two main ideas with details supporting our main ideas. 
Get your vocab. map signed by a parent near the grade
Study your vocabulary words/definitions.
Study your bookmarks which demonstrate the different ways to introduce quotes.
Bring in completed reading log tomorrow. 

History:

We read and discussed chapter 3, lesson 2.

Science:

We did an experiment which resulted in a really bad hair day due to static electricity.

Other:
Wear red, white, and blue tomorrow and practice your song.
Get your behavior card and Thursday folder signed-return science test and history test signed by tomorrow.

We continued our work with rounding and estimating decimals/fractions. Please complete pages 30-33.  We WILL go over these answers together tomorrow. Just do the best you can... these problems WILL be on a math test!


ELA

We continued our work with finding two or main ideas. Bring in your two main ideas with 3 supporting details on "Project Mulberry"

Study for vocab test on Friday.


Science

We took our chapter 7 science test today.

Other: 

Progress reports go home tomorrow-many students are receiving progress reports for not completing their iREADY lessons in a timely manner. 10 reading and 10 math lessons were due by LAST Sunday.
1.Today was PE and it was very hot, please send your child with adequate water.
2. Friday at 8:30am is our Cougar Pride Assembly, please join us at Hoover to see our performance of "We the People"
3. Students need to wear red, white, or blue on Friday.

We worked on rounding decimals and using them to make estimations...please work on RCC pages 26-29.


English Language Arts (ELA):

We continued to work on finding the main idea in class.

Vocabulary maps due tomorrow for the Aqua/Hydra words

Get parent signatures on the spelling test, story test, and the cause & effect writing assignment.

Reading logs due on Friday.

Science: 

TEST TOMORROW on chapter 7!!! Study.

Other:

Be practicing your song for this Friday's performance during Cougar Pride-wear red, white, and blue on Friday.
Tomorrow is picture day-bring your PE clothes with you if you don't want to do PE in your picture clothes. Change at lunch recess!  You will NOT be allowed to change your clothing during class time.

Math: 

1. We reviewed multiplication and division with multi-digit numbers.

2. Complete only the odd numbered problems for multiplication and division-EVERYTHING else is OPTIIONAL! Worksheet pages 55-58.

3. Get 4 items signed by an adult; yes, I need a signature next to each grade on each separate assignment.

Language Arts:

We passed out the vocabulary words; the aqua/hydr(a/o) word list on spellingcity.com and we studied finding two main ideas.

History: 

Read chapter 3. lesson 1.


Science: 

We reviewed chapter 7.  TEST = this Wednesday...STUDY. This will NOT be an open book test.

Other:

1. Get the library permission slip signed by tomorrow.
2. Be practicing the "We the People" song
3. Wear red, white, or/and blue on FRIDAY
4. Picture Day = Wednesday (Free dress, not free-for-all dress) Make sure you are wearing modest appropriate clothing for your lovely picture.

Math: 
We reviewed place value and powers of 10. We also took quizzes on Place Value & Powers of 10.
BRING your worksheets from Thursday for "smartie grading" on Monday.


ELA: 
We took a spelling test and a story test today.

I handed out reading logs today. Students need to fill them out daily and get a parent signature on Thursday nights. I will collect them on Fridays.

History:
We took our spelling test.

Science:
We discussed food chains and webs today. We also felt some whale baleen. We'll have a science test next Wednesday on chapter 7.

Other:
By last Sunday, your child should have completed 6 reading and 6 math lessons in iREADY.  By this Sunday, your child needs to have completed 8 reading and 8 math iREADY lessons.

I'll be sending out progress reports this coming Thursday.

Many students did not return their iREADY reports signed by a parent...please return these ASAP.

Today we reviewed prime factorization & powers of 10.  Complete two worksheets practicing these skills. :)

Language Arts:
We reviewed cause and effect with a Making Meaning lesson on earthquakes.
Remember to study for spelling and story test for "A Drop of Water".

History:
Open book test on Chapter 2 tomorrow. STUDY!

Science:
We worked on understanding mixtures today.  We'll continue this tomorrow.

Other:
 McDonald's dine out night tonight for the Central Avenue location from 5pm-9pm, all proceeds benefit the 5th grade.

Math: 

We finished the Ready Common Core unit on Reading and writing decimals pages 21-23 completed by tomorrow.

Language Arts: 

We had an extensive discussion/lesson on complete sentences, run-on sentences, and fragments.
We completed a worksheet on combining sentences.

Study: Story test and spelling test on Friday.

Science:  

READ chapter 7, lesson 4 by tomorrow-Mixtures.

Remember that in the "science world" of vocabulary a mixture means that NO MOLECULES have changed even if they have grown so small that you can't see them anymore (like salt or sugar combining with water).

Science test = Next Wednesday, 9/23/15


History: Reread Chapter 2, lesson 2- History test = Friday-OPEN BOOK!

Other:
Dine out night = Tomorrow night at the McDonald's on Central Ave. (5pm-8pm)

We reviewed our Practice Book pages 80-81. We reviewed what makes a quality fifth grade level response.  A) Answer the question in your own words. B) Use a quote to PROVE your answer.

Due tomorrow:  Question 1 on page 372 from Reading Book. Remember to add the cause and effect boxes filled with the question and the answer. Then, do a quality fifth grade level response

Art:
We continued to fill our body bags...ask your children about this.

We finished the place value section of the RCC (Ready Common Core) book and reviewed rounding.
Ask your child why we 'count by' when the instructions say 'round to'.

1. Get three worksheets signed by a parent. Parents, it's up to you whether or not you want your children to finish worksheets that are blank.


ELA:
READ, READ, READ. Do your iREADY lessons.

Science:
We reviewed metals, nonmetals, metalloids. (Cannon's Class only)

Other:

We had Kumbaya time today with Mrs. Choi learning the Preamble song...PRACTICE at home!

1. Complete Static Electricity page.

We systematically attack word problems: ASK your children to show you the steps for CUBES!

Language Arts:
We read "A Drop of Water" today and discussed the importance of diagrams/photographs/illustrations in science textbooks.

Assigned for tonight: read the story again!!!
Test on Friday for "A Drop of Water" vocabulary: study!

Science:
We talked about electron flow, AKA ELECTRICITY!!!
HOMEWORK = get a note signed saying that you explained the difference between a series circuit and a parallel circuit.

Other:
 It is crazy hot at school; please, please, please send 2 small water bottle or 1 large water bottle for your child to drink at school.

We took two quizzes and I gave two worsheets-one on ordinal numbers and one math boxes.

Language Arts:
We took a spelling test, a story test on "Line Drive."

Due Tuesday: Complete your inference about this question: How do the inventors of the merry-go-round pump feel about children?

Science:
Complete the Worksheet on Atoms & the Periodic Table by next Wednesday for Cannon class and Thursday for Shelton Class.

Shelton students: get your graded worsheet signed by an adult at home.

Cannon students: if you didn't already do so, get your graded worksheet signed by an adult at home.

Math:
  We worked on number concepts of arrays and review of landmarks: maximum, minimum, range, median.

2 worksheets on arrays- remember 8 X 6= 8 Rows X 6 Columns


Language Arts:
We worked on making inferences about informational text. Students finished making an inference about the type of woman that Harriet Tubman was.

Remember the formula:
State your inference. Use a quote to prove it. Explain how the quote connects to something in real life that you know to be true.

Art:
 We began our tape models...ask the students: it is chaotic structural art that involves tape, saran wrap, and imagination.

Science:
Finish Atoms/Molecules worksheet

Other:
A giant thank you to the students who are making respectful and kind choices to one another at ALL times. I love teaching such awesome kids.
