 We completed two quizzes today on adding decimals and on factors, prime numbers, and rules of divisibility.

Math:
We completed our unit on adding and subtracting decimals.

Language Arts:
We had our test on "Rope Burn" today.
Many students did not return their graded work signed by a parent. Please make sure all assignments are returned promptly.

Science:
We finished chapter 3, Lesson 3 on Salts.
We covered the pH scale and the uses of salts.
Chapter Eight test = Tuesday

History:
Projects due on Tuesday, September 30.

Other:
All iReady lessons-2 more for math and 2 for language arts are due this Sunday by 9 pm.

We worked on adding/subtracting decimals in the Common Core pages 50-54.
Make sure you know the steps and one way to model your answers!!!

Big test tomorrow on "Rope Burn."
Make sure that you know your vocabulary words and the difference between interrogative and declarative sentences.

Review Science chapter 8, Lesson 3.  Write a question about the pages that we covered: 436-439.  We will cover pH scale tomorrow.

Math:
We completed all pages on rounding and estimating. Common Core 30-33; MJ 32,33,35,36, 39 & two math worksheets
When rounding:
1. Count by the place value that they tell you to round to.  
2. Draw a number line and write your two choices on each end.
3. Place the value that you must round to on your number line.
4. Decide which side is that number closest to & use that number for your answer.

Example: Round 4.569 to the nearest tenth.

1.  Counting by tenths... 4.5, 4.6

4.  It is closer to 4.6, so the answer is 4.6.

Math:
Your child should be able to explain how to round decimals using a number line. We completed through common core book p. 29

Language Arts:
We made a six part story diagram. Your child should be able to find a direct quote from the story to prove that they know what the characters, setting, conflict, 2 plot events, and resolution. Make sure you include the page number for each quotation.

History:
Remember that next week, Tuesday your History projects are due.

Science:
We finished Chapter 8, Lesson 1. Have your child explain what reactivity and  precipitate means. Also, how are photosynthesis and cellular respiration are related?

Other:
Type for 20 minutes; read for 40 minutes;  4 more iReady lessons due by this next Sunday, September 28 at 9pm.
Picture day tomorrow, don't forget your order form!!!! Remember it is free dress, not FREE for ALL. You may wear whatever color you wish, but it must still be appropriate and modest.

1. Your child should be able to explain how to write numbers using expanded notation and multiplication expressions. Ask them about the steps.
2.  We began Common Core book pages 14-23, I expect them to work on the first five pages.
3. Quiz tomorrow on factor rainbows and factorization

Language Arts:
We took notes Everybody Cooks Rice using a Tree Map. We made inferences to figure what types of families Carrie visited while looking for her "mooching" brother.
Tomorrow we'll finish the story and write compare/contrast paragraphs about two of the families.

History:
We finished chapter 3. History Project Assignments go home tomorrow. :)

Other:
Do your iReady assignments, read, type. BREATHE and enjoy the cooler weather.
Kumbaya time tomorrow, yay!  I'll be leading the Klimt art project.

Math:
1. Get multiplication quiz signed by a parent/grandparent. (Remember bring them the pen and the quiz, this increases the likelihood of success!)
  2. We reviewed rules of divisibility by completing MJ p. 19
  3.  We worked on common core pages 12-13-whew, we got deep into powers of 10!  Make sure your child understands how powers of ten are related to multiplication and division.

LA:
  We listened to the tear-jerker story Something to Remember Me By.   We are combining our knowledge of inference with the good writing practice of including many details by completing a paragraph that describes, without stating, an object/animal/band/food that either disgusts or scares us.  I will grade these on how well, I can infer based on students' details.

History:
   Finish reading Chapter 3, Lesson 1.  Read with a purpose!   Look for ideas that you can use for your upcoming barter project.  Who? What? Where? Why? How? When???????  More details to follow.

Other:
Read for 40 minutes. Type for 20 minutes

1. We are working on powers of 10. Your child should have completed through page 13 in the green common core book.
2.  Math quiz needs to be signed tonight.

We worked on The Lotus Seed story and making inferences. Ask your child how to make a complete inference.

History:
Students are required to finish reading through chapter 2 in their history books. This is their reading tonight.

Other:
1. Parents need to sign the acknowledgement of our blog and iReady homework requirements: this is titled "Welcome to Fifth Grade"
2. Type for 20 minutes
3. REQUIRED HOMEWORK:  Finish at least 2 math and 2 reading/language arts lessons on the iReady program by this Sunday, September 21

1. We continue to slowly work our way through our common core math book...place value is trickier than we previously thought. Check out Common Core green book pages 1-6.
2. We took a quiz on prime factorization.
3. Continue working on those multiplication facts.

1. We worked more on how to make fifth grade inferences. Check your notes   ________ + what I already know should be in your inference assertions.


Science:
Chapter 7 test completed today.

History:
We read and discussed chapter 2 lesson 1. :)

Math:
 We are working on place value! Remember each place is a power of ten higher or lower than its neighbor.   For example, the tens place is 1/10 the value of the hundreds place.  Conversely, the hundreds place is 10 times the value of the tens place.

  We completed the common core green book through page 3.

English Language Arts:

We are working on inferring from text. We find text clues & pair that information that we already know to make an inference.

We completed through page 20 in the common core book.


Science:

Chapter 7 test tomorrow! STUDY!!!!! Remember your atom presentations, your notes, and your book.

Other:
Type for 20 minutes. Read for 40 minutes.  Dance, play, giggle, and smile!!!

1. We took the unit 1 test today, expect it graded by next Monday.
2. In the mean time, we will begin working on the MEANING of place value.
3. To study: YOUR MULTIPLICATION FACTS.  You should know them as quickly as you know your name, when asked.

Language Arts: 
We're working on summarizing informational texts. (informational text = writing that teaches you something)

When we summarize, we restate in OUR OWN WORDS with key details from the text!

Science Test = Friday, Chapter 7!!!

Other:
Rules assembly, what did you think????

Homework:
Type = 20 minutes
Reading = at least 40 minutes

Summarizing means restating the main idea in your own words with only KEY details from the text.
We finished through page 12 in class.

History:
We are working on chapter 3-barter, barter, barter.

Homework:
Read for 40 minutes. Type for 20 minutes.  Play for 100 minutes. :)

Math:
We worked on prime factorization.  Make sure you know how to do this!!!  The Unit One test this Wednesday covers this concept. We completed math journal pages on prime factorization Lesson 1-8. More practice is available in the the Study Link 1-8.

Wednesday's test = arrays, prime/composite numbers, prime factorization, exponents.

Language Arts:
We're working on Main Idea and Details in the Green Common Core books. We completed pages 2-10 in class.

Great job on the 2 paragraphs on Benjamin Franklin, everyone!


Science:
 The Chapter 7 test has been moved to Friday due to the rules assembly which conflicts with our test-the nerve of some people.  Y'all are doing a great job studying and I'm sure you'll do a great job on the test.  Review your notes, your atom projects, and the review we completed in class.

Other:
Make sure you're reading 40 minutes each night  and taking an AR quiz AT LEAST every other week.

Typing is mandatory each night for 20 minutes, as usual.

Science:
We had a fabulous introduction to compounds and chemical changes.
Science test next Wednesday on ALL of chapter 7.

Other:
Tonight is the Blaze pizza fundraiser...I'll be there early! :)
