Math:
Students took a quiz today and prepared for the big fraction unit test on Monday. The test is a cumulative test on all fraction lessons in the RCC book.

ELA:
Students began persuasive writing essays. We focused on a topic, choosing the audience. Brainstorming and initial outlines were begun.

History:
Students worked in groups on their colonial project presentations: they're due Wednesday.

Science:
The Chapter 5, lesson 2 quiz was postponed until Monday.

Kumbaya today. :)

Other:
The Jaxx Theater Group has their Sound of Music shows this weekend. I'll see ya tomorrow at 3pm!

18 iREADY lessons in reading and 18 in math are due by Monday.

Math:
We worked on Unit 3, pages 24-26.  Be ready for Unit test on Monday for "all things fraction."

ELA:
We worked on editing our essays. Be sure final copies are turned in tomorrow.

We'll continue working on our persuasive essays on making Glendale safer tomorrow.

Science:
We completed a study worksheet on Chapter 5, lesson 2-quiz tomorrow.

History:
Projects are due next Wednesday, Feb. 3.  We worked on them for a few minutes today in class.

Other: Be sure you keep up with your iREADY, typing, and independent reading.

ELA:
Finish 5 questions for "The Power of W. O. W." -Reading book page 582

Science: We took a quiz today on Chapter 5, Lesson 1.

History: We began reading chapter 7 of History Alive.
Projects are due next Wednesday.

Other:
Make sure you're keeping up with your INDEPENDENT READING, IREADY, AND TYPING. By this Sunday, you need to have completed 18 reading and 18 math lessons since November 1st.

Math:
  Please study the fraction lessons in the RCC book, esp. p. 110 and 168-171. We'll discuss 168-171 tomorrow. I am not checking that work is done on these pages, I am encouraging engagement/studying/trying to do the work on these pages.  This will prepare you for the test next week on Monday or Tuesday for the big unit test for RCC All Fraction Lessons.

ELA:
  Print your essay for my review/revision tomorrow.  I am soooooo proud of your excellent work ethic on this project. Way to go, fifth-graders!


Today was Improvisation class with Mrs. Gilbert and PE with Coach Sanchez.

Science: I gave a worksheet to review for the quiz tomorrow on Chapter 5, Lesson 1 -Earth's Atmosphere.  I am NOT grading this worksheet, however it will be extremely helpful in preparing for the quiz.

Other:

Math:
 Students took a math quiz today on division with fractions.
  Please make sure that RCC 164-167 is complete with rectangular models only- you can leave the number line models for tomorrow. :)

ELA:
Students worked very hard on finding examples to prove the authors' use of literary devices/techniques taught them about theme.
Make sure 3 body paragraphs & COW (conclusion, then you're opinion of a certain writing technique and why) are written.
Read and typing practice

Science:
Chapter 5, lesson one on atmospheric pressure was reviewed. Quiz on Wednesday.

Language Arts:
Finish the three paragraphs you worked on today.
Some of you need to finish the Gettysburg Address assessment tomorrow.

Science:
Chapter 4 Test tomorrow

History:
Students learned their colonies today for the upcoming presentation assignment.  They need to do some quick research on their colony tonight. be sure to include "elementary school" and "colony" in the search to make sure results are grade appropriate.

Math: We are becoming super experts at dividing with fractions.
We completed pages 55-57 worksheets in class. Sooooooo easy!
Make sure page 63 row 2 only and p. 80 problem numbers, 4,5,6,10,11,12, 22,23,24, 28 and the super blob problem are complete.

Expect quizzes on Friday-be ready for word problems...

ELA: We spent today covering Informative Essay writing organization. We hook the reader, tell what we're writing about, teach 'em 3 points about topic, review and give our opinion on it & why.

Remember, Gettysburg Address is due tomorrow. BE READY. This is your only LA homework.

Science: We read about where California gets its water supply.

Important, often confused,  vocabulary: reservoir-man-made lake; aqueduct-man-made river; aquifer-groundwater

History: MANY students are redoing their history summaries due to problems with plagiarism.

Other:  Make sure you're reading, typing, and getting those iREADy lessons done. :)

Math: 


1.Today we practiced the steps for dividing with fractions: Study your notes.
    1. Turn all terms into fractions (convert mixed numbers into improper fractions.
     2. Leave the dividend alone!
     3. multiply by the divisor's reciprocal (simplify/cross cancel)
     4. simplify & write units

2.Make sure 2 worksheets are complete: p. 82 and p. 84, along with Unit 3 p. 19, 22-23

3. Get parent signatures on worksheets p. 124/125 and 105/106

Language Arts:

We studied "My Country Tis of Thee" song with its rhyme scheme, and looked at alliteration, tone of Dr. King's delivery of his speech, read Sneetches, discussed metaphors, humor, and various other tools the author's used to teach about equality and liberty.

Homework: Memorize Gettysburg Address by Thursday.  Choose whether you want to write your essay on liberty or equality.

Read and type nightly!!!!!!! (There's all my big emotion for the day...)

Afternoon:  We had improv and PE today.


Science:

Make sure you are ready for Science test on chapter 4 this Friday.

Other:
Be sure to be reading each school night for at least 45 minutes, type daily, and get your iREADY lessons done.

Math:
We worked on dividing and modeling fractions.  Make sure to finish RCC 156-157. Unit 3 16-18

ELA
We studied the I Have A Dream speech. We compared this speech with the Gettysburg Address. Remember,  Gettysburg Address must be memorized by next Thursday. Here's my google drive copy of the speech, if you want to copy it = Gettysburg Address

Science:
We took a quiz on Chapter 4, Lesson 3.

Kumbaya:
We learned each other's names and practiced our cartooning skills.

Other:
No school on Monday in observance of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.  See you all Tuesday. :)

Math:
1. Today we reviewed four different types of math models for multiplication and division of fractions.
2. Complete 2 worksheets: one is adding/subtracting fractions and one is multiplying fractions: yes, you must cross simplify.
3. Get quiz from last Friday signed.

Language Arts:
1. We read the preamble to the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Gettysburg Address.
2. Students must memorize and recite the Gettysburg Address by next Thursday.

Science:
Quiz on Chapter 4, Lesson 3 -Freshwater Resources tomorrow.

History:
We read and discussed the text features of History Chapter 7.
I previewed an upcoming assignment where students will create presentations teaching each other about the different colonies.

Other:
Tonight is California Pizza Kitchen night fundraiser for fifth grade.

Be sure to read and type each night.

Today was the most awesome field trip ever...ask your children to share what they did regarding making decisions and learning about the Reagan presidency. These students are fired up about the power that our government officials have and use.

Students read "Interrupted Journey" and "Kids Can Make a Difference"
Students answered questions and came up with a plan to help some aspect of school life.

Science:
Students took quizzes on lessons 1 and 2.

History:
Students continued to read about the early colonization of North America-Plymouth Colony.

Other:

Math: We took a quiz adding and subtracting with unlike denominators. We finished reviewing the RCC pages 115-118. Finish p. 119 by next WEDNESDAY. Monday and Tuesday are field trip days for separate fifth grade teachers.

ELA: Students compared and contrasted characters in "When the Circus Came to Town." Make sure that you are typing each school night for at least 20 minutes and are reading nightly.

Science: We read about the water cycle. Be ready for quizzes on Chapter 4, Lessons 1 & 2 on Monday.

History: We continued to review early colonial life in North America and review necessary information for the field trip on Tuesday.

Many of my students did not turn in the summary chart and paragraph for the Jamestown Colony. Make sure that is turned in on Monday-no matter what! I will accept all late assignments. :)

Other: By this Sunday, each student needs to have completed 12 lessons since November 1st in both Reading and Math.
