Math: We worked on common core math problems involving large amounts of data. This required creating tables. It is strongly recommended that you review pages 88-89 over the weekend to prepare for a Tuesday test.

Language Arts: We're writing our stories. It is fun!!! Ask your children to show you the google docs stories.
Reading logs are due next Thursday.

Science: We reviewed tests and looked at cool plant videos online. There's nothing like carnivorous plants to inspire students to study botany.

History: We took notes on early North American European explorers and "primogeniture".

Other:
1. Our wreath fundraiser is a great way to raise money for a fabulous play day.

2. Daylight Savings ends this weekend, November 1, 2015 at 2:00 a.m. "Fall Back". 
Remember to turn your clocks back one hour. 

3. As a reminder from the Fire Department changing your clocks is also a great reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
 
4. Please have safe and happy Halloween. 
Remember: 
1. Only go trick or treating with an adult. 
2. Bring a flashlight thing so old ladies like me can see you when we're driving. 
3. Cross streets only at corners. 
4. NEVER go into a stranger's house for candy. 
5. HAVE YOUR PARENTS CHECK YOUR CANDY BEFORE YOU CONSUME ANY OF IT. 
6. Do NOT bring your candy to school.

Math:
 1. Students had a substitute today while Mrs. Cannon was receiving more iREADY training.

2. The students completed pages 14-15 of the Unit 2-GEMS book and 1 division worksheet.

3.  Mrs. Cannon will collect tomorrow: the p. signature on the most recent test and p.sig. on the dvision worksheet turned in yesterday. 


ELA:
Students worked on typing their stories into a google docs account. Remember you CAN work on these at home.

Science:
We took our test on Chapter 1.

PE:  Don't forget to send water with your children-it's hot out there in PE Land.

Other:
No school Friday!  NO COSTUMES tomorrow!

Dine out at Islands next week & our FABULOUS wreath sales continue.

Red Ribbon week = WEAR red tomorrow.

Thursday folders will be sent home tomorrow. :)

Math: 

We continued our foray into dividing with decimals: RCC pages 78-81.


ELA: 

1. We worked on identifying the theme of a story: Remember "Theme is the lesson that the reader is intended to learn."  Complete RCC pages 128-133.  Remember to write your answer to number 4 on a separate piece of paper. :)

2. Also, all p. sig.'s on the friendship/celebration worksheet will be collected tomorrow.

English Language Arts:

Math:

1. We took part one of the major math test. Part two will be Friday...study.
2. Complete 3 math worksheets by FRIDAY (Mrs. Cannon's homeroom class has a field trip tomorrow-no math class)

The three worksheets are:        
A) Busy butterfly worksheet-both sides
B) powers of ten worksheet (just like the quiz we took!)
C) Interpreting remainders (this is really important...wink, wink)

English Language Arts:

We worked on punctuating dialogue today. We loved writing about "whiney" fifth graders.  All parts fo the graphic organizer are due by Friday. We'll finish our organizers next week and starting using them to compose our stories. :)

Science: 

We began Chapter 1, lesson 3 notes.

Science test = next Wednesday

History:

Chapter 4 test = next Monday

Other:

 Mrs. Cannon's homeroom: Field trip tomorrow!!!! Wahooo....PACK A LUNCH for tomorrow, in case we're not back in time for regular lunch at 11:45am.

Math:

1. We learned the procedure for dividing decimals today.
2. Finish RCC page 73 (#7,8 only) & page 75 (#15 & 16 only)
3. MATH TEST tomorrow-all subjects covered this year are fair game except dividing with decimals!  Study, but DO NOT stay up late to study; staying up late will make you do worse not better on the test.

ELA:
We finished all the sensory details for all of the graphic organizers today.
Reading logs are due on Friday, as usual.

Art:
We finished our bodies today...they're fabulous.

PE:
Ran the mile today! I'm going to be tired tonight, mom and dad!

Science:
Remember Chapter 1 test = next Wednesday, 10/28/15 Study!

History:
Chapter 4 test = next Monday, 10/26/15 Study!

Other:
Fifth grade wreath sales information is going home tomorrow!

Math:
We continue using extended problem solving skills to incorporate math procedures with complex word problems.
1. Finish Unit 2, p. 10.
2. Read pages 12-13 in the Unit 2 book
3. Get BOTH quizzes signed by an adult.
4. Major math test on Wednesday, prime factorization, adding/subtracting decimals, multiplication/division of whole numbers. (basically anything we've learned this year is fair game)


ELA:
Continue to complete the sensory details for stories 2 and 3 in your graphic organizers. Remember describe in GREAT detail what the narrator or characters smell, see, feel, hear, taste.

Complete the suffix paper-following directions and coloring the main picture only.

Science:
Science test on chapter 1 = Wed., October 28.

History:
History test on chapter 4 = Monday, October 26.

Other:
A) Student council elections are quickly approaching.
B)Fifth grade wreath sales are coming!
C) Master Class applications are due tomorrow.

Math:
We took two quizzes and did an activity based on real life order form. It was interesting...
Worksheet on division due Monday. I need to see the work! You may staple the work to the worksheet and turn it all in together.

Language Arts:
We decided upon themes for all of our stories and filled in the events for our stories.

Science:
We learned about how groups of cells form tissues, which in turn form organs, which in turn form organ systems, which all together form organisms. Science always brings up the most fascinating conversations.

Kumbaya:
  My class did color themed self-portraits.

Other:
  There seemed to be great turn out at the fifth grade fundraiser at Blaze Pizza last night...P-I-Z-Z-A, pizza, pizza, all the way!

Math:
We worked on models of multiplying decimals today.
Complete RCC pages 68-69
Major math test on multiplication, division, and decimals = Next Wednesday, 10-21-15. Study


ELA:
We had a major earthquake drill today during ELA. We completed the conflict resolution for our graphic organizers.

Science:
We made double bubble graphic organizers comparing and contrasting animal and plant cells.

History:
We read about Christopher Columbus, the Columbian Exchange, and small pox today.

Other:

Math:
 1. We worked on modeling multiplication decimals. Students need to explain how the models work to an adult at home and get a signature.  
2. Complete math boxes worksheet (p. 102) and
3. Number stories/magnitude estimates worksheet (p. 45/52)

English Language Arts:
We continued to work on graphic organizers for writing narratives.
1. Make sure all six graphic organizers for conflict and setting are complete.

Science:
Take SHORT notes- a few words only- on the plant cell organelles. Remember that plant cells have some of the same type of organelles as animal cells, so don't forget to add mitochondria, nucleus, and cell membrane to your plant cell organelle notes.

Other:
  Blaze pizza fundraiser tomorrow.  Yay, get some yummy pizza and tell them that you are part of the Mark Keppel fundraiser. Go fifth grade, go fifth grade!

HELP!!!!  One of our parents lost a LARGE amount of cash and a blank check in our room last night at the 5th grade parent meeting. Please ask your children if they saw that money around the classroom. Thanks so much.

ELA:
We're working on the narrative writing unit. Complete the "situation", the "characters", and the "narrator" for ALL 6 graphic organizer pages.

Art & PE were in the afternoon.

Other:
Thursday = Blaze Pizza fundraiser
Tonight = 5th grade committee meeting in Mrs. Cannon's room 1107.

We continue to divide with pride.  RCC pages 46-49
Get three quizzes and district benchmark signed by an adult.

Language Arts:
We're kicking off our narrative writing unit...we've got some stories to tell.
Tonight pick ONE detail from your reading. Share that detail with me in a paragraph which explains WHY the author chose that detail.

Science:
We're getting down to the cellular level. Finish reading lesson one and take notes on mitochondria and vacuoles -explain their functions (their jobs in the cell)

Other:
 Parent meeting tomorrow night in Mrs. Cannon's room-1107 for fifth grade committee
Thursday = Blaze Pizza in the Glendale Galleria Dine Out DAY-just mention "Keppel Fundraiser" and 20% goes back to the fifth grade committee. Wahoooo!

1.Complete RCC p. 45-the bottom two problems only.
2. Complete the lattice worksheet.
3. Complete Math boxes worksheet only numbers 1-4.

English Language Arts:
Complete two paragraphs on the perseverance of Nellie Bly
Get p. signature for vocabulary map.
Study for story test, vocab and spelling.  (Spelling on PB p. 21)

Science:
Get p. signature on Science test and return in Thursday Folder.

History:
We did presentations...it was great!

Other:

We took notes about Nellie Bly's perseverance throughout her journey around the world. Tree map with at least 3 details due by tomorrow.

Other:
Field trip permission slips must be returned. All three pages must be completely filled out.

Math:
We covered metric conversions and reviewed plotting points on the coordinate plane...we run before we jump. Tomorrow is a district review benchmark test.


English Language Arts:
We began taking notes on the bold and tenacious Nellie Bly.

Art:
    ..the body parts are growing...it's like Frankenstein in that art room...cool and scary!

Science:
Chapter 8 test tomorrow....study!

Other:
Mr. Pate came in today to speak to the students about this year's musical theater class. It will be held afterschool  on Tuesdays from 2:30pm-4:30pm...only serious and seriously committed students are invited to apply. Further information and the application will be in this week's Thursday folder. Please return it ASAP, he's only taking the first 60 students.

Math: The substitute teacher showed students how to plot points on the coordinate plane. There are two worksheets on plotting points which will be collected tomorrow  and 3 review worksheets which will be checked for smarties tomorrow.

ELA: Students were introduced to vocabulary, spelling, and story from their reading books for the "Nellie Bly" story. Tests = Friday. Spelling words are on PB p. 21, vocab are on PB p. 18

Science:  Chapter 8 test = WEdnesday, chapter review completed in class.

History: Students were given time in class to work on history projects-which are due on Thursday.

Other: The PTA fundraiser is still going on. PTA reflections contest is also underway...see the Mark Keppel Elementary website for more details.

Math:  We took 3 quizzes today. Study your notes briefly over the weekend.  Monday you will learn about coordinate plane dot plotting.

Language Arts: Students took a vocabulary quiz and summarized an interview given by Cesar Chavez's grandson.

READ-new reading logs were distributed, due next Friday.


Science: We covered salts, their formation (metal + nonmetal, or strong acid with strong base which results in salt with water products)
 Test on Chapter 8 = next Wednesday.

Science review will be given in class on Monday. Study!

History: Projects are due next Thursday

Other: Go PTA fundraiser, woot woot woot.

Math:

We continued our work on adding and subtracting decimals with word problems.

Tomorrow we'll correct RCC pages 58-59 and take quizzes.
Study your notes on rounding, +/- decimals, and place value. (wink, wink)


ELA:
We continued our work on summarizing in our own words today. Tomorrow will be the vocabulary quiz on aster/aud words and a summarizing test.
Reading logs due tomorrow.


Science:
We worked on metals today.  Chapter 8 test = next Wednesday!

History:
We had class time to work on projects today.  History projects are due next Thursday, 10/8.

Other:

Did you know that the Glendale Unified School District has a breakfast and lunch program that may qualify your child to receive a free or reduced-priced breakfast and/or lunch at school everyday?   All you need to do is fill out an application, and you will be notified if you qualify.  
​All families must reapply each year and last year's lunch cards have already expired.  ​
The application can be found at mealapp.gusd.net or you can get a hard copy from our school office. If you need any help filling out the form, any of the ladies in the front office will be happy to help.
