It’s Time For...
5th Grade Play Day
Dear Parents and Guardians,
On Tuesday, June 5th all fifth grade students will enjoy a day of fun, games and food on the 3rd level of Mark Keppel’s playground.
Here are the important details for you:
Please send your child to school in comfortable clothes and send an extra change of clothes, as they will get wet. Have them wear shoes that are comfortable, a hat and sunscreen.
Lunch and treats have been generously donated for this event. Fruit and sandwiches with a variety of deli meats, cheeses, lettuce/tomato/mayo will be provided, or you may send a packed lunch with your child to enjoy.
Included in the day’s activities is an inflatable obstacle course. This activity requires parents/guardians to sign a liability waiver (see attached). Your child will NOT be allowed on this activity without a signed waiver. Please sign it and return it to the front office or to your child’s teacher by Monday, June 4th.
We need volunteers! Please click this link to sign up to volunteer. Please help us make this day fun and easy. We would love to have you there! Please pick a shift or two, or stay all day! Let’s send our kids off to middle school with a lot of love and good energy.
If you have questions, please email Lisa Baer (lbrei66@gmail.com)
Thank you to our generous community partners: Vertigo Banquet Hall, Menchies and DJ Lu Meli, for helping to make this day special!

Greetings!

Thank you for your past entry and/or your interest in the CaliforniaStreaming Digital Photography Contest. As a courtesy to those who have entered in the past and those who have requested, I would like to share with you the theme for next year’s contest. Our goal is to have the next year’s theme selected by the beginning of March in order to give you plenty of time to plan for it in your curriculum. So, here's the info....

Theme: Participate!
Deadline: Friday, March 1, 2019
Please be aware that the website has not yet been updated with this information. We anticipate that it will be updated over the summer. Once it is updated, you will be able to visit http://ccetc.net/photocontest for the entry form and submission guidelines.

If you are concerned about spam, please know that I am planning to send out two additional email(s) as a courtesy reminder about the entry deadline - one in the beginning of January, and the other 1-2 weeks before the deadline. If you would prefer not to receive any further emails from me about the contest, just let me know and I will remove you from my list.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Laura Smith

Dear GUSD Families and Community,

We are deeply upset to hear of yet another school shooting on a high school campus today, this time in Santa Fe, Texas. Our hearts go out to the students, families, and staff at Santa Fe High School. As these tragic shootings seem to be taking place with alarming frequency in American schools, it is important for us to work together as a community to ensure our campuses are safe. I want to assure parents and families that we are doing everything in our power to protect students and staff on our campuses.

Thank you to those of you who attended our Community Safety Meetings in March. If you were unable to attend, you can watch videos of the meetings and find answers to community questions on the GUSD website. Since March, our Facilities and Support Operations (FASO) staff have conducted safety walk-throughs of every GUSD campus to identify any areas for improvement. FASO is currently working to ensure all doors have door blocks, and that exterior classrooms have tinted windows and blinds and privacy screens are installed around playgrounds to block view from the street. We are also increasing the number of security cameras on our campuses. These projects will be completed by the start of next school year.

In March, more than 400 GUSD teachers, administrators, and staff participated in active shooter training led by the Glendale Police Department. All remaining school staff will participate in a training this August. Additionally, GUSD is working with law enforcement to streamline access to our campuses during emergency situations, including drafting a Memorandum of Understanding to grant officers direct access to GUSD security cameras to speed up response time in an emergency.

Our schools have emergency plans in place for a wide range of situations, from natural disasters to bomb threats to active shooter situations. We conduct emergency drills multiple times throughout the year and constantly review and revise our emergency plans with assistance from law enforcement. GUSD is currently revising our safety protocols, including a new protocol of waiting for confirmation from school administration before evacuating when a fire alarm is pulled.

All GUSD schools are equipped with security gates and cameras, and visitors must sign in and out at every school site. We encourage all families to keep your emergency contact information up to date so we know we can contact you in an emergency.

The GUSD Board and administration are keenly sensitive to the concerns of our students, parents, and community regarding school safety. The solution to school safety extends beyond the walls of our schools and requires a relentless commitment and effort from every stakeholder connected to our students. Please do not stand by – if you “See Something, Say Something.”

Report any suspicious activity to your school or our district staff. You can call your school directly or download the GUSD app and submit an anonymous tip using the app tip line, which is monitored by GUSD staff, seven days a week.

Thank you for being a constant partner in ensuring the safety of our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Winfred B. Roberson, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools
