From Pam Drake, the Fifth Grade Committee chairperson:
It was great to see some of you at the parent meeting last night. For those of you who weren't there, here's a recap on what we decided and a few updates:

  1. Camp: Those of you with children going to camp should have your invoices and camp forms. A couple important points:
    1. Please put the child's name on the check
    2. The teachers did not choose the Alpine Tower as an activity, so you can ignore that page in the packet
    3. Please fill out all other pages completely
    4. The discipline agreement MUST be signed by the child and parent
    5. If you send medication, the camp says it MUST be in the original packaging
    6. Please try to send this in as early as possible, so we have plenty of time to contact parents if there is anything missing
    7. We will send out an information sheet in March with final details
  2. Sees Fundraiser: We decided not to do this at this time because it interferes with our agreement with the Apex Fun Run. We are considering a later date if we need this.
  3. Book Fair: Since we are not doing the Sees Candy fundraiser, we need to do the Book Fair. We had 2 parents step forward to volunteer to begin coordination - note that both parents are already coordinating other 5th grade activities also. We really could use at least one more person who is not coordinating another activity to help with overall coordination. If you are interested in coordination or helping out the week of the Book Fair (week of April 3), please email Eileen  leener129@aol.com.
  4. Funds: We need to earn close to $12,000 in total if we want to cover all 5th grade expenses through the 5th grade fund. We've raised close to $4,000 already. Our priorities in funding are as follows:
    1. Additional camp costs: Our goal is to keep camp costs at $300. We will cover any cost above that amount. We anticipate additional costs to be somewhere between $2,000 and $2,500. These costs are covered in what we have already earned.
    2. T-shirts: Teachers have requested that students wear their t-shirts for the 5th grade picture; therefore, the committee determined we would need to cover the cost of t-shirts. We don't have final costs on these yet, but estimate approximately $1,500. We will may ask for some donation for t-shirts to help cover the costs.
    3. Promotion: We anticipate promotion costs to be under $1,000. These costs need to be covered by the 5th grade fund.
    4. Class Picnic and class gift: We will use whatever funds we have at the end of the year to cover these. Worst case scenario is that students will bring their own lunches to the class picnic. If we have additional funds we can cover food and activities.
    5. Colonial Day: The Colonial Day field trip (including transportation) will cost close to $5,000. We will offset what we can from the 5th grade fund. The rest will be passed on to families to cover as a field trip expense.
    6. If we do well and have additional funds, the teachers have asked if the 5th grade can cover the costs of a Ben Franklin printing press on-site activity.
  5. Additional fundraising: Please note the fundraising activities that are coming up. The more participation we have, the more we earn!
    1. Book Fair: Again, we need volunteers. And the more books the students buy that week, the more we make!
    2. Dine out nights (these are open to the entire school):
      1. February 13: La Cabanita in Montrose all day
      2. March: 8 days at Two Guys in Italy (details to come)
      3. In April we'll have a bonding/dine out at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank. It is open to the general public, and we will make $5 on every ticket sold.
      4. In May, we are looking at an ice cream social at Baskin Robbins.
    3. If anyone has any additional ideas, please contact Pam pmjdrake@sbcglobal.net
  6. We'll send out details for our next meeting - likely the week of March 13.
